Bank Account Facilitation and Capital Registration
There are nearly 20 commercial banks including the state owned and one of the biggest banks in East Africa, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. The National Bank of Ethiopia acts as a central bank. Development Bank of Ethiopia is for financing projects and investments. In the various stages of company registration, one has to deal with one of these banks. We at T & T Business and Investment Consultancy will help you deal with banks:
Investment permit for foreign investors – after submitting the investment application, you will be given a letter addressed to the National Bank so that you can have a foreign currency account. Also another letter to the commercial bank of your choice. We will help you save time, money and energy by guiding you to have a bank account, to transfer the minimum initial capital, to follow-up with the banks and then secure your investment permit.

 

Ethiopian Investors – opening a business account is easy provided you have the investment permit or the commercial registration and the business license. We coordinate the whole process so that you can avoid some hiccups here and there.

Loan from Development Bank – investors go to the development bank to secure loans. We coordinate the whole process so that you can secure the loan smoothly.
Capital repatriation is allowed for foreign investors. Your capital (in cash or in kind) has to be registered at the National Bank following the right procedures so that you will not face any problem later. We will get your capital registered at the National Bank of Ethiopia.

Please note that you need to have a physical address with authenticated lease agreement in order to have your business registered in the commercial register. Commercial Registration Certificate

We will make our initial contact with you in your home country (if possible) in order to fully under your needs and expectations. This will involve registering all your personal and business details, discussing your preferred moving date, and understanding exactly the type of property you need etc. Having discussed the services you require, we will send you our provisional budget. Once we have your approval, we will start working for you, principally in looking for your new home and organising the documentation you will need to live in Ethiopia. We will then meet you in Ethiopia. At this meeting we will confirm the exact services we will be providing for you and sign a contract of conditions. We will then show you around your chosen city, showing you the most important and interesting places to visit. We can organise temporary accommodation for your visit(s) to Ethiopia until you are in possession of your own property.

Returning to your home country
Upon your return to your home country we will assist you in the cancellation of leases, bank accounts, insurance policies and residence permits etc. T and T will assist you in your search for your new home. Once we fully understand what kind of property you require we will inspect properties on your behalf and select up to ten for your personal attention. We will email you pictures of the houses we have pre-selected, together with comments on the properties and their location, in order for you to shortlist those you would like to visit. We will organize for you to view these properties over a period of 1 or 2 days. T and T will accompany you to the properties. If they do not meet your expectations, we will repeat the process until we find your ideal home to rent or buy. When you have selected a property that you are happy with, we will accompany you to local banks to compare mortgage rates and conditions. Then, in the presence of your bank representative, a notary and a lawyer we will proceed to sign the contract. Please note: T and T do not accept responsibility for this financial transaction – they are purely responsible for the pre-selection of property, accompanying and assisting their clients on viewings and introducing clients to the professional assistance necessary for the transaction. T and T accept no responsibility for any damage or loss other than that received directly as a result of services specifically supplied in their contract with that client. Connection to Amenities T and T will contact local water, gas, electricity and telephone and internet companies to arrange for you to be connected to their services. T and T will organize these contracts and provide you with the companies contact details. Upon your return to your country, we will also handle the cancellation of the contracts on your behalf. The client is responsible for all charges relating to connection and maintenance. Building Works T and T will help you organize any building work you need done. We will help you contact and contract architects, etc
Insurance
T and T will provide you 1 or 2 quotes from different home insurance companies in order for you to choose the one most suitable for your needs. T and T will explain the conditions of each policy and organize the contract from the company that you prefer. The client is responsible for the insurance premiums and any other fees relating to the insurance.
Moving Arrangements
T and T will provide you with quotes from a couple of companies for you to choose the one most suitable for your needs. We will negotiate the moving date for you and deliver your signed contract to the company you have chosen. In order for T and T to obtain these quotes on your behalf, we will ask you to complete a questionnaire on the items to be moved (number of items, size, fragile items etc.). We are happy to be there on the day of moving in case any issues arise.

Arrival and Departure
We will make an initial contact with you in your home country (via email or phone) to understand your needs and requirements, and to make the first steps towards setting up your business. We will meet you in Ethiopia and present you with the dossier – “Business in Ethiopia: Ethiopia’s economy and a guide to taxes etc”. In this meeting we will work out exactly what services you require and sign the contract between the company and T and T. We will book accommodation for your first visit, unless you have a property of your own. Should you decide to close your business and return to your country T and T will cancel your leases and insurance policies and close your bank accounts etc. on your behalf.
Assistance in setting up a business
T and T will explain to you what kinds of companies exist in Ethiopia, and once we have understood your needs we will be able to advise you which kind would be most suitable for you and your situation.
We will assist you with the legal formalities:
• Obtaining a licence to operate in the town
• Applying for/registering the patent of your brands, products, names, copyright, etc.
• Registering the business at the Central Commercial Registry and applying for the certificate to confirm your sole right to the company name (similar to registering your business at Companies House).
• Write the constitution deed for the business
• Meeting with the notary to receive his/her certification
• The declaration of foreign investment, if applicable, in front of the notary.
• Apply for your provisional C.I.F. (company tax identification code) at the tax office
• Pay the transfer tax at the tax office (this payment is made by the client).
• Register the company at the local Corporate Registry
• Apply for your permanent C.I.F.: This number is necessary to begin company operations.
• Register the company at the Ethiopian Tax Office: a fiscal license for each activity and establishment must be obtained.
• Register the entity and its employees at the Social Security General Treasury.
• Legalise the official accounting books at the Mercantile Registry. We will also be able to calculate the costs involved in setting up your own business, and provide you with information on grants and subsidies available from the government to help you. Opening your office
T and T will provide you with assistance in finding suitable premises to buy or rent. We will pre-select 10 premises with the facilities and location that you have specified, and will accompany you to view them. We will also accompany you when you sign the lease and arrange the finance, as necessary. We can help you to set up a business bank account and arrange office insurance – we will provide you with information on several companies and organize the contracts on your behalf. Once you have your office we will organize connection to amenities for you (gas, water, electricity etc). We can also organize telephones (landlines and mobiles) and internet connections. T and T will arrange the contracts for you; however the client is responsible for all payments (connection, maintenance, services, etc.)
Moving Arrangements
T and T will provide you with quotes from a couple of moving companies. We will negotiate the moving date for you and deliver your signed contract to the company you have chosen. In order for T and T to obtain these quotes on your behalf, we will ask you to complete a questionnaire on the items to be moved (number of items, size, fragile items etc.). We are happy to be there on the day of moving in case any issues arise.

Business Travel and Tourism
Ethiopia is the 3rd diplomatic city with 118 diplomatic missions after New York and Geneva; it is the Headquarters of the African Union Commission (AUC), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and many international organizations. Due to Ethiopia’s historical diplomatic role, many countries have representations in Ethiopia through Embassies or Honorary Consulates. Ethiopia’s advantages in the business tourism area are mainly security, price and convenience as many international organizations are already set up here. As a result, the country hosts dozens of international conferences per year, attracting many international visitors. In 2016, business travel comprised about 24% of the total GDP for travel and tourism. Furthermore, business travel spending is expected to grow by 8% in 2017 according to the WTTC. The growing number of business tourism creates considerable opportunities for investment in conference venues, catering and related services.

 

ACCOMMODATION
There are currently six internationally branded hotels in Addis Ababa, most notably the Sheraton, Hilton and Radisson. There are a number of hotel projects in the pipeline but there is still further potential for the development of hotels given that Addis Ababa is the home to the African Union and the United Nations commission for Africa. In January 2014 for example, during an AU summit there was an inflow of 3,000 people in the capital and the demand was for star-rated hotels with high standards. Given the natural and historical attractions of Ethiopia and the comparatively underdeveloped nature of the tourist industry, a number of opportunities exist for hotels outside of the capital. There has been considerable investment in projects in the past few years with notable eco-lodges such as the Bale mountain lodge and Arba Minch paradise lodge proving popular with international tourists and Ethiopians alike. Research has shown that the demand for hotel rooms will increase to 3.1 million in 2020. Currently the demand for hotel rooms is higher than the existing facilities despite the recent surge in construction. As a result, the growing number of tourists and business travelers to Ethiopia make the hospitality sector promising.

TRANSPORTATION
The country has six major entry points: by air, Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa; By road Moyale, Metema, Wuchale, Galafi, and by railway Dawale. The main mode of transportation to and from the country is by air with the flag carrier airline of Ethiopia, Ethiopian Airlines. It connects Addis Ababa to all continents except Australia with almost 100 international destinations and 21 destinations within the country. The airline is expanding its route’s all over the world and developing its fleet. Ethiopian Airlines is the first airline in Africa and the second in the world next to Japan to receive the 787 Dreamliner airplane. Currently, Ethiopia is investing in the expansion and modernization of airports in the country in a bid to satisfy growing demand and to meet international standards. Whilst Addis Ababa Bole airport is currently undergoing significant expansion, there is also a vast amount of investment going into the improvement of regional airports. The country is also massively expanding its road and railway networks connecting major cities within the country and neighboring infrastructures such as the Djibouti port. Notable projects include the recent completion of the Addis-Djibouti railway, the Chinese financed light rail system in Addis Ababa and the new expressway connecting the two largest cities in the country, Addis Ababa and Adama.

BACKGROUD OF TOURISM SECTOR IN ETHIOPIA
Ethiopia is a country endowed with diverse and rich natural resources. Its long history and mosaic cultures have provided the world with several UNESCO heritage sites and very attractive tourist destinations. Dating back to human origins, the Country has numerous archeological sites with the most famous being Hadar in the Afar region where Lucy, the 3.2 million year old Australopithecus afarensis, was discovered. Antiquity ruins such as the temple in Yeha in the north of Ethiopia testify of the long history of civilizations in the country dating as far back as 700 BC. The country is also endowed with remarkable fauna and flora with indigenous plants and animals that make the country ideal for eco based tourism. The country has nine UNESCO registered World Heritage sites and hosts eight Cultural sites and one natural site (the Simien National Park), with an additional four under current review. In addition, the country has 5 more sites on the Tentative List attesting the outstanding value of Ethiopia’s wealth to the world. In fact Ethiopia has as many, if not more tourist sites than Egypt. However, the country has yet to utilize its grand potential and increase its share in the world tourism market. In 2017, Ethiopia ranked 116th in the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index 3.10 score (1-7) according to the World Economic Forum Travel & Tourism Index Report. Its most competitive indicators are price (ranked 64th), availability of natural resources (ranked 69th), cultural resources (ranked 70th) and environmental sustainability (ranked 56th). Despite the resources and the competitiveness of the sector, travel and tourism has a low share in Ethiopia’s economy. Tourism’s direct contribution to GDP was 2.2% in 2016 and the industry directly supported around 466,000 jobs. Tourism & Travel sector comprises many subsectors among which are accommodation, transportation, travel services, food and beverage services, recreation, entertainment and so forth. Figures show that the inbound tourism arrival has increased over the years since the 80s, it reached half a million in 2011 and was 864,000 in 2016. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) in its 2017 country report estimated that in 2012 about 7% of arrivals in the country are for leisure whereas the remaining share is for business. The Ethiopian Ministry of Culture and Tourism has completed a 10-Year Master Plan to boost its tourism sector based on IGAD’s (Intergovernmental Authority on Development) 2013 Sustainable Tourism Master Plan. The primary goal of the Master Plan is to make Ethiopia one of the top destinations in Africa utilizing available natural and human resources, as well as marketing and promotion. Following this plan, Ethiopia is expected to bring three billion USD from the sector and the Government of Ethiopia is doing its share by providing transport infrastructure and services. In addition, Ethiopia has competitive costs for investments in this sector; it has abundant and cheap labor, low utility tariffs and fiscal incentives. Hence the potential is considerable and with the growing number of outbound tourists in the world, Ethiopia is on the road to being one of the top destinations with best value for money.
The Ethiopian government in a bid to develop the tourism industry has created two new entities, the Tourism Transformation Council and the Ethiopian Tourism Organization. The Council will intervene to alleviate obstructions and bottlenecks impeding the development of travel & tourism and develop the country’s strategic plans. To that effect, the Council is composed of members of relevant ministries, mayors of cities, the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, presidents of Ethiopian Tours and Operators Association and the Ethiopian Hotels and Restaurants Owners Association, president of Chamber of Commerce & Sectoral Association (ECCSA) and others. The Ethiopian Tourism Organization will develop touristic destinations, create promotional campaigns and help build the capacity of local travel and tourism stakeholders. Besides the government’s efforts, the stakeholders of the tourism & travel sector are also actively trying to alleviate obstacles and find solutions to challenges in the sector. The Fifth Annual Hotel Show Ethiopia Expo was organized in June 2017 in Addis Ababa to create links between different stakeholders such as hotel consultants, hotel operators, equipment suppliers, tour operators and other stakeholders.
